Spelling words will be coming home for the first time this year. I am assigning homework on Mondays and studying for our test on Friday. If your child does not know the words they may need to practice beyond the assigned homework.

Back to School Night for 4th & 5th grades
August 30, 2016
We are off to a successful year. During the past two days we have been learning the procedures for our classroom and for our school. We've also been learning about Marumsco Hill's Eagle Pride. Ask your child what each letter in Pride stands for. They should be able to give you some good examples.
Thank you for purchasing school supplies for your child. It is greatly appreciated.
We are beginning the writing portion of our report. The first paragraph is about the subject's character. I am asking the students to find two words to describe the person they are researching. We are then finding details to support that the person is courageous, intelligent, determined etc. We will begin our second paragraph summarizing a problem the person overcame next week.
Today I sent home a note informing you about our upcoming biography report. Some students were not able to find a suitable book for the report, so I am asking you to please take your child to the public library if they haven't chosen one yet. We will begin work on writing the report next week. Right now they should be reading their books. I am looking at March 16th as our presentation day and you are welcome to come see your student present.
Thank you for your continued support!
Hi Parents and families!
So far we do not have to make up any of the snow days we have missed so far this year. That's the good news. The bad news is that we still have to be ready for our state tests at the end of the year. The best way you can prepare your child is to read with them each night. I know the reading homework of reading 25 minutes seems pretty easy but some children are not actually reading. If you read with your child, stop and ask questions about the story. I keep telling my students the only way we get better at something is practicing - really that's what it takes. Thank you for continuing to encourage your child by reading with them and taking them to the public library. And please remember to encourage reading on snow days as well :)

Snow Days - May they be far behind us!
I was teasing with my students that they needed to do a snow dance, flush ice cubes down the toilet and other crazy things to help us get a snow day. Obviously, your children are very creative and gifted! Now, we need to get back to the task at hand. We will be having our spelling test tomorrow so please remember to study as I reminded you before we left :) I will also give you some time to study in class as well. We will be finishing up our unit on The New Nation and testing on Wednesday of this week. I hope everyone gets lots of rest tonight and is ready to get back to our exciting learning adventure!
P.S. I've missed you!
Thank you parents for encouraging your child to read over the winter break. I am so excited that so many students took advantage of the hot chocolate challenge. Way to go students and parents!
Winter Break Reading Challenge
I just wanted to let you know that your child is encouraged to take part in our reading challenge over winter break. If they read each day and fill out the hot cocoa activities, they will have a special lunch in our classroom with hot chocolate provided. Please encourage your child. I hope you have a wonderful, restful, family filled holiday.
If you are looking for stocking stuffer ideas please consider some new school supplies. Pencils and pencil top erasers are always a good choice.
Although I don't assign homework over holidays, I would like you to consider making reading a part of your child's recreational time. Have a wonderful holiday!
Thank you for meeting with us over the past week to discuss your child's progress. It is very exciting to work with you as a team to present the best education for your child. Please do not hesitate to email or call if you have any questions.
Full lunar eclipse - tonight!
Check out the sky at 10:11 p.m. tonight. Since you probably have to go to bed before then you can still enjoy seeing the partial eclipse. Enjoy!
Please check out the VA Trekkers website that is linked to the right side of this page. We are currently studying the five regions of VA. This is a great way to experience each region without paying for gas for your car. Enjoy!
